We usually have a number of walrus
oosiks or baculum in stock. The price varies with
size, weight, and condition. An oosik is the bone that most
mammals have in order to provide stiffening.
An average walrus oosik measures around 50 cm or 19.5" long measured straight tip to tip. Many oosiks are yellow and greasy (they are not as white as the ones shown in the photo above). They can be cleaned, degreased, and bleached to make them look more white.
Walrus are legally hunted for food by the Inuit in northern Canada. The
walrus hunt also offers a strong bonding experience for members of the
community. Bacula that are not used
in the local communities for arts and crafts are often available for
sale in Canada or for export
with the proper permits to most countries
other than the United States. There is no commercial hunting
of walrus. We buy our oosiks from Arctic Canada.

Nearly all of the walrus products come from animals that were killed by local hunters for food. The government of Canada restricts the number of walrus that are allowed to be hunted annually.
